How to write an introduction for Writing Task 2

Introduction for Writing Task 2 should be short and simple. Do not waste much time writing a long introduction; spend more time on ideas/arguments and their development. The suggested amount of time to spend on writing an introduction is 5 minutes.

A good introduction needs 2 important things:

A sentence that introduces the topic
A short and general answer to the question (Thesis statement)

Here is an example of an IELTS Writing Task 2 question:

As computers are being used more and more in education, there will soon be no role for the teacher in the classroom.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Here is an example introduction to the question above:

It is true that computers have become an essential tool for teachers and students in all areas of education. However, while computers are extremely useful, I do not agree with the idea that they could soon replace teachers completely.

In the first sentence, the topic of computers in education is introduced while the second answer includes the writer's opinion as the question asks for it. Do not wait until the conclusion to give your opinion.

Example #2:

Question Statement: Some people think that museums should be enjoyable places to entertain people, while others believe that the purpose of museums is to educate. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Introduction: People have different views about the role and function of museums. In my opinion, museums can and should be both entertaining and educational.

Example #3:

Question Statement: We cannot help everyone in the world that needs help, so we should only be concerned with our own communities and countries.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Introduction: Some people believe that we should not help people in other countries as long as there are problems in our own society. I disagree with this view because I believe that we should try to help as many people as possible.
